Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), as one of the leaders of the display revolution over the past decade, have shown huge advantages over other popular technologies, such as Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs), as they provide
better contrast ratios, wider viewing-angles, can be mechanically flexible and consume less power. Current commercial products utilizing OLED technology includes bendable smartphones, rollable TVs and smart vision VR
glasses. Yet, this fascinating technology still faces big challenges regarding energy conversion, operational lifetime, and colour purity.
The primary objective of this project is to develop state-of-the-art OLEDs for displays applications. You will investigate the fundamental understanding of exciton dynamics in electrically pumped devices, giving the foundations to design and fabricate OLEDs that show higher energy efficiencies and longer operational lifetimes than existing commercial ones.
Importantly, studies focusing on how to suppress degradation mechanisms via device engineering will be developed to achieve the ambitious goal. The recruited PhD student will work in a dynamic, cross-disciplinary, and supportive research environment. You will be trained in one of the world's leading centres of excellence conducting research in next generation semiconductor materials and devices.
Training will include device fabrication via thermal evaporation under industrial standards, device characterization using a range of advanced techniques such as time-resolved electro-optical spectroscopy and fundamental photophysics of semiconductors.
