Grant Description

The purpose of my project is to investigate all the attempts to define a new role for the first-born colony of the Kingdom of Italy, Eritrea, from 1897 to 1935.

A particular emphasis will be placed on the relations between the Eritrean colonial administration and the traditional Ethiopian and Arab authorities, to assess whether and how the forms of collaboration established between the colonizers and the pre-existing local authorities have presented elements of originality in the panorama of European colonialism.
