This project aims to experimentally demonstrate satellite to ground quantum communications. The research will leverage the availability of quantum communications hub in-orbit-demonstrator " satellite platform for optical quantum communications- SPOQC" CubeSat mission. Initially, research activities will be focused on the development of satellite optical tracking system based on uplink and downlink beacon lasers.
In labs tracking experiments will be demonstrated which will then be extended to in-field with the help of drones and the tracking of available satellites like ISS and SpaceX. The research activities will be developing quantum communication receiver systems as well.
The work plan for the research will be initially based on literature review on space quantum communications , atmospheric turbulence studies, tracking of movable platforms, machine learning, etc. In parallel to literature review, the research work will start to develop components for the optical ground station and its characterisation. It is required to develop quantum communications receiver as well, including its characterization.
The research will develop new methods and systems based on multi-telescope based quantum signal transmission and detection.
The labs are well equipped to support the research work and related tests. The researcher will get the weekly supervision support, support from the other group members and colleagues to achieve the research goals.
The project is aligned with EPSRC's strategies and research area of quantum technology. There is no other partners are currently involved in the project.
