As migrants seeking asylum continue to be violently repelled from western Europe through the Balkan route (Isakjee et al 2020, Bird et al 2021), this project seeks to make two significant contributions: (i) it will analyse how migrants are being obstructed, detained and deported as they move through the Balkans towards western EU states, and (ii) it will critically analyse the resistive role of border-solidarities and humanitarianism, emphasising the crucial role that local communities and migrant-self organising plays in providing active and material solidarity to people on-the-move.
