Augustus John (1878-1961) prophetically remarked that he would become known as the brother of Gwen John (1876-1939), yet there has been a resurgence of interest in the painter once feted by his contemporaries, with exhibitions at the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Liverpool in 2021 and currently at Piano Nobile in London.1
Any evaluation of John, an elected Royal Academician and well-represented in public collections, might sit awkwardly alongside efforts to revise the history of modern art to centre 'pioneering women' or draw attention to the 'unfulfilled potential' of those with thwarted careers, several of whom were in John's social circle, including his wife Ida
Nettleship (1877-1907).
