This PhD research project aims to address this gap in understanding by taking a combined experimental and numerical approach to investigate the subject area. The project will:
Validate non-linear error estimation tools by comparing low fidelity finite element approximations of representative structures to experimental observations.
Integrate error estimation tools in low fidelity approximation of an engine cowling/core assembly and simulate a wheel-up-landing load case.
Propagate FEA errors observed in low fidelity models to local detailed models and determine confidence bounds on composite material failure criterion.
Perform a sensitivity study at the low fidelity scale to determine the impact of modelling idealisation choices on local failure confidence bounds.
