Grant Description

The project will investigate the largely unexplored history of Scotland's Royalist partisans during the British Commonwealth (1652-1660). This project aims to explain, for the first time, why it was that the forlorn Royal cause attracted so much support during the inter-regnum. Using a broad range of sources, including Gaelic language material,

this will go beyond narrow military and clan histories to show why Scottish Royalists failed to reinstate Charles II, and how they organised themselves as a movement.
