My research investigates Greece's fiscal, trade, and monetary policies during the first wave of globalisation (1870-1914).
I examine why Greece initially failed to adopt the gold standard in 1885 and the factors that influenced its eventual adoption under international financial supervision.
Additionally, I explore whether the 1893 sovereign debt crisis could have been avoided and how Greece's political class responded to external pressures from global markets.
Finally, I aim to understand how Greece's reliance on a narrow range of agricultural exports made it vulnerable to global commodity price fluctuations and how the political system sought to mitigate these risks.
