Child and adolescent-to-parent violence and abuse (CAPVA) has recently gained prominence as a societal concern, prompting a comprehensive public consultation by the UK Government. Estimates suggest that the prevalence rate of CAPVA is 5 to 21 percent which, challenges traditional perceptions of parent-child relationships as characterised by unconditional love.
This study aims to contribute novel insights into the problem by investigating the relationship between CAPVA, the quality of caregiver-child relationships, and the broader family environment. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, this study draws upon attachment theory to unravel the intricate web of family relationships, encompassing parent-child dynamics within the broaden family dynamic.
This study encapsulates a multi-faceted approach that will draw on a range of methods, including questionnaires to assess the nature of violence experienced and the current wellbeing of each family member; structured interviews to assess the attachment quality of caregiver-child relationships; and open-ended interviews (including arts-based methods for the children) to understand the perspectives of all family members within the household, including siblings who are often excluded from research on CAPVA. The study will work with approximately 10 families who have sought support for CAPVA
