Grant Description

Over 800 million people have no reliable access to electricity, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Approximately 2.6 billion people worldwide lack access to clean cooking and the responsibility for household food provision falls disproportionately on women. Organisations in Malawi face blackouts, reliability issues, and affordability

issues-impacting social welfare and economic development. In Malawi only 11% of the population have access to electricity which drops to 5% in rural areas. The current installed generation capacity is 351MW.

This project will look at the feasibility of using and deploying battery-electrolysers in Malawi to combat issues of energy poverty. The project will focus on their feasibility in small industrial, civic or cooperative settings where a solar farm can be deployed alongside the hardware. The project will involve deploying and testing and monitoring

hardware in a representative environment to quantify and qualify commercial and social impacts relevant to full scale deployment.
