Proposal for a CSIS Alliance Working Group on Climate and Health

The CSIS Bipartisan Alliance for Global Health Security will launch a Working Group on Climate and Health in the second half of 2024 for an initial one-year period, with the expectation that its work will extend for a second year.

The CSIS Bipartisan Alliance for Global Health Security requests 275,000 pounds from Wellcome Trust for this working group. The remaining costs will be covered through alternative sources.

An historic transition is accelerating as the connection between climate and health has become more and more obvious, dangerous, and compelling.

Extreme weather—including heat, flooding, and desertification—is combining with pollution and the climate-induced rise of infectious disease to increase threats on multiple fronts.

These forces are reversing the health gains of past decades, increasing extreme illness and death, creating food insecurity and malnutrition, inducing mass migration, and undermining the economic viability of local communities.

The CSIS Bipartisan Alliance will actively build a coalition platform of philanthropies and industry as supporters and core participants of the Working Group. No such platform currently exists in Washington, D.C., committed to climate and health.
