The Full Carbon Costing Tool project aims to develop a new piece of software to enable researchers to quickly assess the carbon impact of a project in development. An initial version of the tool has been developed and piloted on a small scale at University of Exeter (UoE).
This project will build upon this base to develop the software for broader application across the UK research landscape.
In order to achieve this, a number of universities across the UK will contribute to development workshops, pilot testing and guidance definitions. These will prioritise usability, accessibility and broad applicability to support broad uptake of the tool.
It is anticipated that a final version of the tool will be produced by the end of the project and available for release along FAIR principles, with supporting guidance on use for research organisations, researchers and sustainability teams.
The project will also consider how consideration of carbon impacts of research using this tool might impact partnership working and will bring together experienced researchers to ensure that tool development supports equitable partnerships throughout.
