Advancing the climate health nexus: integrating health into global climate change policy and decision-making

The partnership between the Africa-Europe Foundation (AEF) and the Wellcome Trust centres on building programming synergies and leveraging respective capacities to better integrate health into global climate change policy and decision-making and drive cross-continental action around climate and health.

It leverages AEF’s partnership infrastructure across Africa and Europe, and focuses on strategic milestones for new EU and AU policymaking and programming in 2024/2025.

In particular, AEF and Wellcome Trust will leverage this phase of partnership to deepen cooperation at various levels of their organisations, including: (1) building joint advocacy and influence (2) promoting the development of strategic research and evidence, (3) joining forces in supporting innovative locally-led actions.

This includes the integration of the Climate-Health agenda in AEF High-Level Platforms such as the High-Level Group of Personalities and Women Leaders Network, leveraging partnership on the Summit of the Future, organisation of High-Level AU-EU Dialogues focused on sustaining engagement on a Climate Agenda informed by Health and expanding the impact of the Climate x Health platform.

Through this initial stage of partnership, Wellcome Trust will join a core group of leading foundations, regional finance institutions and opinion leaders from Africa and Europe, setting the first phase of programming of the AEF.
