Grant Description

According to an agreement between the Chinese Government and the Cambodian Government signed October 15, 2002, the Chinese government would give nearly US$1.9 million (or in some reports, 16 million CNY) to drill 500 water wells in Cambodia.

The wells will be partly financed from remaining funds (RMB 5 million out of RMB 50 million) granted to Cambodia in the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation signed November 13, 2000 (as captured in linked Record ID#32019). The wells are expected to be located in Kampong Cham, Kampong Speu, Kampong Chhnang, Kampot, and Krong Preah Sihanouk.

The drilling ceremony for the wells occurred on December 30, 2002, and the handover ceremony for the wells was held on July 13, 2004. This is the third batch of wells the Chinese government helping build in Cambodia.

The Chinese government has previously granted 1000 tube wells to Cambodia from the period of 1996 to 2001 (See Record ID#32035).
