In July 2005, the U.S. sponsored an APEC Health Task Force Ministerial Sysmposium in San Francisco, co-sponsored by Hong Kong and Chinese Taipai, to discuss steps toward Avian Influenza (AI) emergency preparedness.
Recommendations from the symposium included improving information sharing among economies, fostering greater cooperation with the business sector, responding to the Global Strategy for the progressive control of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, encouraging adequate compensation for farmers, and basing disease-related trade restrictions on recommendations of international authorities (e.g., the World Organization for Animal Health).
