MORONCARIT LAGOON

This project will be conducted at the Baha Santa Brbara / Baha Yavaros-Moroncarit lagoon complex, located on the southern coast of Sonora in Northwest Mexico.

On an international level, this area hosts a high concentration of continental priority species of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan.

The area is a wintering site of historical importance for many migratory waterfowl species, including Ringed-necked Duck, American Wigeon, Pacific Black Brant, Ruddy Duck, and Crested Merganser.

However, the Pacific coast wetlands are being threatened by the shrimp industry, road infrastructure and agricultural activities which have caused a reduction in available habitat for migratory waterfowl. ..The project will restore 500 acres of wetlands as waterfowl habitat through hydrological rehabilitation; guarantee long term wetland protection and conservation benefiting migratory and resident waterfowl through a 20-35-year conservation agreement with a local community for over 500 acres; and establish a monitoring system for waterfowl and their habitats that will be the basis for future management decisions.
