Grant Description

Human population pressure, infrastructure development, and poaching have pushed the Chyulu Hills National Park black rhino population down to fewer than ten individuals.

The habitat shared by Chyulu NP and Mbirikani Group Ranch is capable of supporting a much larger population, so Kenya Wildlife Services intends to fortify the area into an Intensive Protection Zone (IPZ) and translocate rhinos in to the area from other populations in Kenya to boost this declining population and stimulate recovery.

Funds will be used to help cover operating costs for anti-poaching security, including running costs for daily and extended patrols, salaries and rations, vehicle fuel and running costs, and costs related to investigation and prosecution of poachers.
