In 2000, China's Provincial Government of Fujian funded the Eastern Highlands Mushroom and Dry Rice Project in the Eastern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea. This project was originally sponsored by Xi Jinping when he was the governor of the Fujian Province.
In August of 2017, a number of Chinese scientists and officials visited Eastern Highlands Province to view the progress of the project.
Under this project, local farmers are being taught to use JUNCAO technology, which is a special type of grass that can be used to feed mushrooms, feed livestock, and for other agricultural procedures. Seedlings and dry fungus grass were also given to the province. The project also involved instructing villagers in dry rice growth.
The dry rice and mushrooms are written as 旱稻种子和木耳草苗.
1. The commitment date for this project is unclear. Juncao technology was first given as aid from China to Papua New Guinea in 1997, and that was continued in 2000. China has continued to send teams to assist with this project to Papua New Guinea (see project ID#90249)
