CONSERVATION OF SHOREBIRDS & WATERFOWL I

The coastal wetlands of the State of Sinaloa are affected by agrochemical pollution, direct human disturbance, habitat destruction or fragmentation due to aquaculture developments, deforestation, change in hydrological regimes, and climate change.

To support shorebird and waterfowl conservation, this project includes a variety of actions in five coastal wetlands. (1) Protection: a) Promotion of a conservation agreement for 1,235 acres of critical habitat in Baha de Ceuta. b) Integration of the Navolato Municipality Land Use Plan.

C) Update of the Ramsar site technical sheet for Baha Santa Mara. (2) Management of protected properties: a) Integration of the Management Plan for the Playa Ceuta Lagoon System. b) Installation of habitat management signs in Playa Ceuta. c) Environmental and ecological assessment of the Playa Ceuta Sanctuary. d) Monitoring of and capacity building for tracts owned by Pronatura Noroeste in Santa Mara Bay, covering 5,550.09 acres. (3) Infrastructure development: a) Installation of three MOTUS stations. b) Bi-annual monitoring of shorebird and waterfowl populations in the five wetlands. (4) Training: a) Training of instructors, park rangers and community promoters in shorebird, waterfowl and wetland conservation and monitoring techniques. b) Training of tour operators in birding tourism techniques .
