The Sierra Leone Compact - Electricity Distribution Project - Distribution System Rehabilitation & Extension Activity addresses critical upgrades to outdated and inadequate distribution assets across the country.
The refurbishment is categorized into safety, statutory, network-critical, and efficiency-related investments, funding improvements such as replacing damaged low-voltage cabinets, transformer replacements, infrastructure upgrades, and switchgear board replacements. These efforts are vital to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the distribution network.
The Freetown Refurbishment Sub-Activity will replace 2 x 40 MVA 161/11 kV transformers at the Kingtom substation, enhancing power evacuation to the Western Area and reducing system losses.
It will also replace 11 kV and 33 kV switchgear boards in multiple substations to improve the safe distribution of electricity.
The Western Area Refurbishment Sub-Activity will focus on replacing low-voltage cabinets, adding reclosers on the 33kV and 11kV networks, replacing damaged overhead lines and cables, and upgrading or replacing distribution transformers and switchgear boards.
These upgrades aim to enhance the safety, reliability, and protection of EDSA assets, reduce outages, and improve power reliability for communities in the Western Area.
The District Towns Refurbishment Sub-Activity will fund distribution refurbishments outside of Freetown and the Western Area, with final refurbishment areas determined through due diligence and analysis based on economic indicators, census data, and other factors.
