Grant Description

To document traditional knowledge of navigation and share it with the next generation.

The Marshallese possess a unique and sophisticated system for navigation based on reading the effects of atolls on ocean swells and currents, but only three elderly master navigators remain. The project involves onshore training, sea trials, a sea voyage, and documentation of these activities on DVD.
