Grant Description

To support the comprehensive documentation of the Wayang Kulit Siam, or shadow play, of Kelantan, an uninterrupted 40-day performance of the Kelantan version of the Ramayana epic.

The Wayang Kulit Siam is one of several cultural traditions banned in Kelentan in 1991, an action that adversely affected the generational transmission of the tradition and the number of trained performers.

This project involves the staging and documentation of the performance and workshops and training programs for local youth.
