Grant Description

UDlive is an environmental technology company with market leading solutions for water level monitoring in the wastewater and flood resilience sectors. The market size is growing as public, political, and financial pressure increases to reduce sewage pollution in rivers and prevent or at least mitigate against flooding. Meanwhile, UDlive is increasingly seen as a technology leader in this field, counting the majority of UK water companies amongst its customers, and having won the last two large UK tenders for this type of solution.

UDlive's growth strategy is to keep a technological lead in its current product line, while adding a broader range of monitoring solutions.

This is an ambitious project to revolutionize mmWave radar applications for environmental monitoring, particularly in the water and flood resilience industries, by utilising higher frequencies (120-500 GHz) and wider bandwidths (20 GHz or more). This innovation will improve range detection accuracy, enable precise flow detection, and advance substance profiling for solids and liquids.

The project complements UDlive's existing radar product line, primarily used in wastewater and flood applications. In introducing this technology, UDlive will expand its product range and capabilities, and enhance its position as a leader in this specialised sensing field.

While radar at this frequency and bandwidth does exist, no one has yet adapted for it these applications within the water sector. This will be a significant innovation for the industry. While accurate flow and depth monitoring does exist at the accuracies this project aims to achieve, the current technology used to do it is at a price point that is prohibitive to mass deployment, and requires frequent maintenance and calibration. UDlive's proposed solution will change that, making mass-deployment much more feasible.

Likewise, solid and liquid substance detection in water can be done currently, but the cost and complexity of installations severely limits the scale at which it is deployed.

By enabling mass-deployment of these applications, this innovation will improve monitoring of wastewater networks as well as rivers and other water courses/bodies. The results of this will be: * more effective investment in wastewater infrastructure (to reduce sewage overflows and flooding),

* more responsive wastewater network management (to reduce maintenance costs, and reduce sewage overflows and flooding), * a greater understanding of climatic impact on water levels, * better predictions and advance-warnings of flooding
