Grant Description

Bowman Power Group Ltd. is a specialist engineering and technology firm working in the field of turbomachinery electrification. Bowman has successfully brought innovative electric turbo compounding (ETC) products to the market that improve the efficiency and performance, and reduce the emissions, of internal combustion engines (ICEs) used in stationary power generation. It has also explored their use in rail and marine applications.

The company is looking to move forward and progress its products to a new level of sophistication by significantly improving the performance benefits offered whilst reducing cost and simplifying their implementation. This project will see the development of a fully integrated electric turbocharger (eTurbo) that builds on the skills and experience in the business and outputs of prior projects.

By integrating the electrical elements of its ETC products directly within an ICE's turbocharger, similar energy efficiency benefits can be achieved with less components and therefore lower cost, but with the addition of a transformational new 'degree of freedom' to the engine control system enabling much improved engine responsiveness which can yield further emissions reduction benefits. eTurbo technology will allow the ICE market to develop and evolve in line with the sustainability objectives of all target markets, whereby in the near term the use of diesel can be progressively eliminated in favour of gas (resulting in approximately 20% less CO2 due fuel properties alone), ideally bio-derived gases, and in the longer term, switchover to the combustion of green hydrogen or ammonia in place of any carbon-based fuels

eTurbos are already being developed for the automotive and light-duty commercial markets. Bowman will continue to work through its existing channels to market to address industrial scale (\\>500kW) ICE applications. The project will enable key skill sets and roles to be secured and built in the company in the long term, benefiting the local region with high-technology, high-value job opportunities.

The project contributes to the UK's ambition to lead on all aspects of electrification technology in the area of high-speed electric machines and power electronics. The project's outcomes will be exploited in the UK and internationally and do so in a sustainable way that benefits contributes to the global transition to a cleaner future.
