On 25 March 2009, the Chinese Vice Minister of Agriculture and UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Assistant Director General signed a agreement to establish the FAO-China South-South Cooperation Trust Fund. China contributed $30 million USD to Phase I (Record ID#87769) and $50 million USD for Phase II (see Record ID#87779).
Phase I took place over three years in which $10 million USD was released each year.
The purpose of this special fund was to improve agricultural productivity in the Global South by providing Chinese experts for technical assistance, training, and knowledge exchange. This project has a strong focus on Africa but also included countries in Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
The known sub-projects are as follows: 1) $1,050,098 USD for technical assistance to Malawi (Record ID#58138 and #48940) 2) $1 million for Liberia's National Program for Food Security (see Projects #35267 and #85169) 3) $1.5 million USD for the China-Namibia South-South Cooperation Project (see Projects #62095 and #62098) 4) Unknown amount for the China, Sierra Leone, FAO tripartite agreement (see Projects #30005, #67794, #67793).
The FAO-China South-South Cooperation Trust Fund is also known as the FAO-China Trust Fund.
