Obesity is a highly prevalent condition associated with significant health problems, costs to the NHS and society. Weight loss has substantial health benefits. In the last few years, a number of new Anti-Obesity Medications (AOMs) have been developed which are highly effective (up to 20% weight loss).
These medications are transforming the treatment of people with obesity. With several additional medications in the pipeline, there is a need to rapidly test whether AOMs are effective and safe in Phase 2 trials. The aim of this initiative is to bring together researchers, clinicians and trial methodologists to form ATOMIC, a Consortium who will develop a Platform to deliver Adaptive Trials of AOMs in the UK.
These trials will also include digitally-delivered behavioural interventions to improve diet and levels of activity.
Due to the scale of the proposed initiative, this application is for a 12 month pre-award to develop the networks, engage with industry partners and establish the methods needed to deliver such trials in the UK. Our bid capitalises on the substantial collective experience of the research team who have a strong track record of research in the field of obesity extending from mechanistic studies to clinical trials and population based interventions.
We also benefit from existing NIHR funded infrastructure including the NIHR Clinical Research Facilities and the Biomedical Research Centres. The anticipated impact is that we will be in a position to submit an application for a full Award to deliver Adaptive Phase 2 trials in Obesity in the UK within 12 months. The infrastructure, systems and learnings we develop as part of this process will benefit other areas where Adaptive Trials of emerging treatments are likely to be needed.
