Li-Fi is often considered as a next-generation of wireless communication technology that uses light to transmit data between devices. The traditional Li-Fi solutions are based on amplitude modulation of light emitting diodes (LEDs).
In the current project, we are going to develop a universal Li-Fi spatial modulation unit that can be combined with any light source used in our daily life.
In particular, there can be lighting systems, traffic lights, visual advertisements, windows and other sources of artificial and natural light.
In contrast to the traditional Li-Fi approach, which is based only on LED lamps and has average light output around 50% from the nominal value, our invention reduces the average light output not more than 5%.
The power consumption of the proposed spatial light modulator and, as we assume, its cost will be lower than that for high speed driving electronics for LEDs. This enable us to consider our innovation in terms of effective and health lighting and IoT.
