Grant Description

Graphite is widely used in process industries, E-mobility and digitation. Its consumption is increased rapidly due to increasing of production of lithium-ion batteries globally. Specially the graphite demanding in Swedish metallurgical industries is going to increase due to the fossil-free steel production, which EAF-Electrical Arc-Furnace process is increased. Today all used graphite comes from natural graphite mines or fossil based artificial production.

The main purpose of this project is to develop a low-energy-consumption and a low-CO2-emissions, a high resource efficiency process to produce fossil free graphite, which can be used for electrodes in EAF and anodes in battery application. The proposed process is based on catalytic graphitization of the biomass derived biochar. Suitable catalysts will be screened, and optimization of process parameters will be conducted. Finally, a process with details parameters will be proposed.
