Large-scale implementation of biofuels will be required if Sweden are to achieve its goals of the phasing out of fossil fuels in the transport sector.
Pyrolysis, which today is beginning to be a commercially established process, can be used to achieve a liquefaction of biomass.
However, the pyrolysis oil produced has properties that make it difficult to integrate into existing refinery infrastructure, but a hydrotreatment of the pyrolysis oil in a slurry-based process could be the intermediate step required to enable large-scale integration into existing refineries, as shown by previous experiments.
This project aims to investigate whether it is possible, in a commercially viable way, to produce 100% renewable fuel components and chemicals from low-grade biomass via pyrolysis followed by slurry hydroprocessing and downstream conventional refining and the goal of the project is to deliver a finished and competitive process concept.
