This project aims to exploit the potential of building thermal mass as a resource for increased flexibility in the electricity grid. There is a lack of knowledge about to what extent and under what conditions the flexibility can be realized without violating thermal comfort.
The project will address this gap and give an overview of the thermal flexibility of Swedish single-family houses built in the 1940s and onwards, having different envelope qualities, construction types, and heating and ventilation systems. Quantitative data on heating power, shiftable energy and indoor temperature will be provided. Project outputs can be served as a base and used for a wide range of applications, such as for the development of control and optimization strategies for space heating and estimation of flexibility potential for one type or a group of buildings etc.
This will be performed by detailed and dynamic IDA-ICE simulations, covering a wide range of Swedish building stock.
