Västerås is building a new district with the vision "it is easy to live sustainably in Sätra" with the ambition "Sätra is unique and is at the forefront of sustainability, structure, architecture and technology". It is desired to enable property owners to produce and share solar energy. Today it is not legal to place microgrids between housing for this.
With the introduction of the European regulations "Clean Energy Package" it might change. We want to enable optimized use of solar energy in the area, where surfaces set the limits for solar production rather than regulations.
The project is a feasibility study where we explore the possibilities of Sätra becoming a virtual energy community. Mälardalen University will investigate how large a degree of solar Sätra can produce and consume, as well as the grid utility in a community. By involving private property owners, further values can be considered. The study will result in a recommendation regarding the next phase, implementation.
