A new type of energy efficient and climate friendly ground construction for single family houses and smaller commercial buildings is examined. The proposed construction is constituted of cement-bound macadam, a technology used in road construction. Compared to in-situ cast concrete slabs on ground, the dominating technology in single family house construction in Sweden, grounds based on cement-bound macadam has the potential to lower the use of cement in this segment by 60 – 80 percent.
The potential to save energy is approximately 15 GWh/year, while the emissions of carbon dioxide can be lowered by 9 million kilograms/year.
The proposed project will use experimental methods to examine aspects related to choice of materials, production and functional requirements posed on house grounds. The results of the project will include proposals to suitable ground sections. Two of the proposed sections will be demonstrated at full scale in laboratory.
