The MinFarm innovation consists of developing the only IoT-over -Satellite Edge Computing technology to enable environmental and vibration sensors for monitoring wind turbines offshore to connect to cloud resources via satellite in remote locations where no cellular or grid power is available to a controlled and predictable low cost per sensor.
The connectivity of the IoT sensors is a critical component of Condition Monitoring and Predictive Maintenance of wind turbines which contributes to decreasing time and cost for maintenance by discovering problems at the correct stage based on information received in real time. The maintenance work can more often be planned to the optimal point in time which decreases downtime for offshore wind turbines by 20-50% which according to forecasts for this energy source for 2030 would increase its production capacity by 8-27 GW and thereby decrease carbon emissions by 8 000 – 27 000 tonnes per hour compared to coal power plants.
