Helios Innovations has developed a new evaporation method capable of evaporating fluids using low-temperature waste heat without vacuum. The technology’s capabilities have previously been verified cleaning seawater and fluid hazardous waste, and in this project a verification of black and thin liquor. Today, several TWh of high value energy in the form of steam is spent evaporating liquor using conventional evaporation methods in Swedish paper mills.
If Helios’ new method proves equally effective at evaporating liquor as it is at cleaning seawater and hazardous waste it would have the potential to save hundreds of GWh worth of steam, replacing it with low-temperature waste heat that otherwise would be blown away with cooling towers or dumped into watercourses.
In this project Helios will both construct a prototype capable of handling the aggressive liquot, and also map the energy- and cost savings this technology could potentially entail for society, if applied on a large scale.
