This project will investigate the potential for a carbon-free truck transport solution operating on hydrogen combustion engine. Hydrogen as renewable fuel is an enabler to reducing Green House Gas emissions.
In the project a new high efficient hydrogen combustion engine concept will be developed by Volvo and SEM, based on direct hydrogen injection with spark assisted ignition. A new ignition system with variable capability, enabling improved performance, will be develop and applied.
A deeper research study on hydrogen ignition and combustion process will be conducted in a PhD work at LTH by utilizing the degree freedom provided by the novel ignition system by SEM. The transport mission, operating on hydrogen fuel, will be demonstrated by vehicle duty cycle tests at Volvo test center.
Results of this project will show that hydrogen combustion engine is an alternative pathway achieving carbon-free transport solution, that can in the near time frame, be implement on the transport mark
