To reduce CO2 emissions from passenger cars, gasoline fuels with a high degree of renewables (significantly more than current 10%) is an interesting addition to electrification. It can be used in both new and existing vehicles. It is unclear how such fuels should be designed and what technical challenges it leads to.
This project aims at investigating the effects of renewable gasoline with various molecules/degrees of renewable content (up to 100%) on combustion and emissions formation including particulates under relevant operating conditions.
With the results from the project, both the vehicle and the fuel industry will be much better prepared for emissions effects of increasing amounts of renewable hydrocarbons in gasoline.
The fuel companies can use the data when designing new renewable fuels while the car makers will be provided with know-how on how to improve the robustness of engine calibration to variations in the fuel characteristics.
