A viable solution, for long-haul-heavy-duty engines, which are difficult to completely electrify, is the usage of green hydrogen.
The main goal of this project is to reach the same power-density in a heavy-duty engine operating on a carbon-free, renewable fuel, compared to diesel fuel without compromising on engine efficiency and emissions.
This goal will be reached using an innovative solution, operating an engine with a fully variable valve timing system on hydrogen fuel in two-stroke engine operating mode.
The project is a collaboration effort between Chalmers and Volvo Trucks, including H2 engine knowledge gathering, gas-exchange simulation, engine prototype build and validating and optimizing experiments. The project will be executed over two years and a post-doc. researcher will be employed by Chalmers.
The total project budget is 8 400.
The requested support from the FFI program is 4 200 kSEK, corresponding to 50% of the total budget, to cover the costs of the University.
