It is strategic for Sweden to develop a competitive battery technology to meet its energy transition goals by 2050. While solid-state thin film batteries (SSTBs) are a promising option, several factors impede their commercialization.
NovelCABs aims to demonstrate the versatility of the liquid feedstock based thermal spray (TS) approaches, suspension plasma spraying (SPS) and solution precursor plasma spraying (SPPS) to enable coatings of third generation solid electrolytes and Ni-based oxide cathodes as a case study to attain requisite crystallinity, controlled stoichiometry, and tailored microstructures.
The process-structure-property relationships generated in the project will also establish the TS approach as a platform for future development of superior SSTBs.
The project will combine the considerable complementary expertise of the Thermal Spray Group at Högskolan Väst (only academic R&D group on TS in Sweden) and the Angström Advanced Battery Centre (ÅABC) at Uppsala University.
