Air borne Swedish rescue services are almost exclusively depending on helicopters driven by fossil jet fuel, Jet A1.
Reliability and readiness are crucial for their operations, and the transformation to a fossil free society, and contributions to global and national climate goals, need to be accomplished without negative effects on every day procedures. Our project aims at starting the transition of the Swedish airborne rescue fleet to fossil free operations.
Coordination between 112-operators will be initiated and for the first time in Sweden, actual tests with biofuel on a helicopter will be done for six months.
Alternative fuels and fuel supply chains will be evaluated and strategies for the change to a non-fossil fleet will be compared.
The evaluation will include economic, technical and logistic aspects and the fuel will be analyzed from a life cycle perspective. The goal is to form a groundwork for all public institutions with airborne rescue operations, to change until 2045.
