Grant Description

The purpose of the project is to develop a process for CO2-neutral nitrogen production.

The nitrogen industry by the Haber-Bosch process accounts for 2 % of all fossil-based greenhouse gas emissions globally.

SUNIFIX® (Sustainable Nitrogen Fixation) is a new patent pending fossil-free process for the fixation of nitrogen with air, water and renewable electricity as the only inputs.

The process is energy efficient, it can operate intermittently and it can thus be powered by locally produced renewable electricity that does not compete for electric grid capacity.

The end-product is nitric acid that can be used for example for rare earth element mining or be converted into nitrates for fertilizer production. The process is financially attractive already on a small scale, which enables production close to the end-users.

This project aims to make research and investigations to develop the reactor that will form the basis of a pilot plant that will be created as a next step.
