The project will investigate the use of ultrasound as a substitute for chemical refining in glass melting. The method has the potential to provide an efficiency of more than 50% of the energy requirement and shorten the melting time from 24 hours to minutes. In the project, the method will be developed by conducting a study via a lab scale for large-scale smelting.
The Swedish Energy Agency assesses that the project can contribute to Sweden's energy conversion because, if successful, it can provide major savings in energy in the glass industry.
