This project is about our oldest preserved wooden structures: the roof structures in our medieval churches.
The project compiles good examples of how medieval church roofs can be managed to achieve sufficient energy efficiency and sustainability with simultaneous consideration of cultural-historical values. The project documents information about structures and their materials as well as their cultural-historical values. It reports and discusses the buildings' energy efficiency and comfort and describes good renovation solutions.
Climate change is coming faster than expected, and measures are being taken at a high pace. It is extremely important that the measures implemented do not technically damage these unique constructions or reduce their cultural-historical values.
The project is important for today's and future managers of the churches, but also for the public. This fragile medieval cultural heritage is a public interest and a unique part of a good built environment.
