Outdoor lighting that falls outside where it is intended and where it has no function is a waste of energy. Spill light has a negative effect on the behavior and well-being of species and a risk of affecting ecosystems. For protected areas, spill light can pose a direct threat to the survival of species, especially for light-sensitive ones. At present, there are no established methods for measuring and assessing the environmental impact of light.
The purpose of the project is to develop methods for measuring spill light in protected urban environments and to investigate and develop limit values for ecological impact. The project will focus on developing methods for measuring and conducting measurements in terrestrial and aquatic environments such as urban nature reserves or rivers through cities that are inhabited by protected and/or red-listed species.
The results will contribute with valuable and highly prioritized knowledge and experience in the international standardization work
