Thermal networks together with seasonal storage provide a promising solution to integrate waste heat, and heat from renewables in the energy system.
There is a very large amount of heat in this form which can be utilized to significantly lower the use of resources for heating and cooling of buildings.
But these coupled systems are inherently complex in terms of design and operations; and advanced tools are necessary to take advantage of their capabilities. Modeling and simulations are key as they predict operational scenarios in virtual environments. However, limitations in modeling can strongly limit their scope and the value they can provide.
This project focuses on modeling of borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) and the challenges arising from their integration with thermal networks.
A team of experts from KTH and Polytechnique Montréal will work on these challenges with the goal of including more realistic system operations and enable better design and control the system.
