Grant Description

Sweden is part of the integrated European electricity market.

The country is now experiencing electricity prices at record levels because the Russian invasion of Ukraine has driven fossil fuel prices, and thereby continental electricity prices, to excessive levels. The planned electrification of the Swedish economy could be in danger if the high electricity prices prevail.

How integrated should the electricity market be? Is there a risk of protectionism if countries were allowed to limit trade for domestic purposes?

The aim of this project is to extend our knowledge about the benefits and costs of international integration of the electricity market in an uncertain world.

The results shall provide a basis for how to devise appropriate policy measures at the EU level to achieve an integrated electricity market that is both environmentally, economically, and politically sustainable.
