We already live in a world dominated by DC. The majority of renewable energy, such as solar, produce DC and most home electronics, LEDs, machines and electric vehicles consume DC. In addition, we store energy in batteries in DC.
However, most of our electricity grid carries AC, which means several AC/DC conversion steps, resulting in power losses. In total about 15% of the energy we produce is lost. The aim of the research was to use new technology to remove the need for inverters and conversion steps to bring down the total power loss.
The solution was to use the battery itself for both energy storage and conversion and, by connecting the battery cells in real time, generate the desired power output with minimum losses. X-Verter® battery architecture supports both AC and DC grids, has been verified in the laboratory (TRL 4) and is ready to be demonstrated to customers.
