The project aims to clarify the commercial potential of a user-centered, digital tool that enables designers and producers to evaluate the climate impact of products within the textile industry early in the design phase. Such a tool - designed with an intuitive interface that supports ease of use - has great potential to radically streamline resource use and energy consumption in the textile industry.
80 percent of a garment's climate impact is in the production phase. The energy comes from fossil based raw materials and energy waste occurs within each part of the value chain. In parallel, more and more of today's clothes are virtually designed on avatars instead of - as in the traditional way - starting as physical samples on dolls.
The goal is therefore to develop a business plan for a stand-alone tool that make transparent sustainability data available in the design phase and that can be connected to various software for virtual design and pattern construction of textile products.
