Previous research has shown that it is possible to build CO2-neutral power systems at a relatively low cost.
Such systems based on model results are characterized by significant transmission expansion, and that nuclear power is not competitive even with optimistic investment costs.
However, the robustness to unforeseen events, such as technical problems and political shocks, of systems with a high share of solar and wind has not been satisfactorily investigated.
This project develops a methodology to systematically investigate how to design an energy system that is robust to unforeseen events, such as very high fuel prices, transmission line breaks and extreme weather events.
The project will provide specific knowledge about Sweden, which is different due to its high dependence on hydropower for regulation.
The project will contribute policy-relevant knowledge on the importance of national control over generation capacity and dependence on imports of electricity and fuels.
