Support to rational decisions concerning maintenance and renovation of clay brick facades. With focus on resource and energy efficiency.

In the proposed project, knowledge is developed and synthetized regarding rational maintenance and renovation of brick facades in the Swedish building stock from the beginning of the 20th century and onwards. Decisions concerning maintenance and renovation are often based och schematic plans, disregarding the actual condition of the facades.Poorly informed decisions can lead to actions with limited or even detrimental effects on durability and energy performance.

A mapping and in-depth analysis is made of practices regarding maintenance and renovation of brick facades, with focus on Swedish and northern European conditions. A synthesis is made of international experience and research focusing on methods for condition assessment, maintenance, energy renovation and demolition. A handbook is produced with the aim of giving property owners, building consultants and building contractors access to fact-based and practical advice regarding rational handling of brick facades
