The aim of the project is to reduce CO2 emissions and develop a resource-efficient, sustainable production of formate and oxygen via electrocatalysis.
The goal is to develop a prototype of an electrochemical cell with catalysts for CO2-to-formate and water-to-oxygen reactions.
The catalysts consist of nanoporous metal oxides with additives that can increase their stability and the porosity contributes to an increased active surface.
The stability of the catalysts over time and the possibility of upscaling are factors that affect the material selections.
The effects of impurities in electrolyte and feed gas will be investigated to see how they affect the activity of the catalysts. This will show the requirements for using residual products from the pulp industry in chemical production. A flow chart to analyze implementation costs will be constructed.
Finally, a prototype will be manufactured and tested to convert CO2 and water to formate and oxygen.
